History
Sudoku was originally called Number Place and was first published in New York in the late 1970s.
The puzzle was introduced in Japan in 1984 and was called suji wa dokushin ni kagiru which can be translated as "the numbers must be single". This was later abbreviated to Sudoku: su = number, doku = single.
Sudoku was launched in Britain on 12 November 2004 and since then has been described in the world media as the fastest growing puzzle in the world.
